The SLRD is hiring a part-time Local FireSmart Representative for Electoral Areas A & B for a 36-week term contract.
Pay: $37.00 per hour.
Expected hours: 25 – 30 per week.
Expected start date: 2025-03-03.
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Lillooet, BC.

Reporting to the Wildfire Mitigation Lead, the Local FireSmart Representative is responsible for the implementation of the SLRD FireSmart Residential program by actively supporting community members with wildfire preparedness, prevention, and mitigation through public education as well as residential vulnerability assessments and recommendations.
The successful candidate will work directly with residents in their communities, as well as remotely from home. Access to a reliable internet connection and a vehicle in order to deliver in-person FireSmart activities in remote areas of the SLRD are required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct on-site FireSmart residential vulnerability assessments in Area A & B and provide risk reduction recommendations to SLRD residents on how to mitigate wildfire hazards on their properties.
- Promote the SLRD FireSmart Rebate program and provide support to participants.
- Organize and host community events such as BBQs, FireSmart Clean-up days and other related education events.
- Deliver presentations to community members during FireSmart Education Days and other program events.
- Conduct community wildfire hazard assessments for participating communities in the context of the FireSmart Canada Neighbourhood Recognition Program.
- Recruit community champions and support them as they plan and implement wildfire mitigation activities in their own neighbourhoods.
- Attend local events such as farmers’ markets, to engage with the public and distribute FireSmart information.
- Attend training to continue education in wildfire behaviour, structure protection, and fuel mitigation for reducing wildfire risk.
- During local wildfire emergencies, provide homeowners with last-minute FireSmart recommendations to protect their homes, prior to an evacuation.
Qualifications:
- Strong knowledge of fire prevention, FireSmart, and emergency preparedness programs.
- Strong local knowledge of SLRD communities, and local First Nations.
- Knowledge of fire and public safety education, fire service operation and emergency management are required.
- Strong ability to work independently, to manage and organize work schedules and FireSmart Assessments bookings, and to organize travel in rural and remote areas.
- Ability to effectively deliver educational and outreach materials to a variety of audiences.
- Local FireSmart Representative and/or Wildfire Mitigation Specialist qualification or willingness to obtain.
- Preference may be given to individuals who have firefighting experience.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
